The HDT pit was telling Doug Chivas, then in the lead, to stretch his fuel as far as possible but at the top of the mountain the car ran out of fuel.
Chivas was able to tiptoe the dead car down the mountain and with sight of the pits tried to clutch start the car, but 100m from his pit
he was forced to push. With metres left the officials allowed the pit crew to push the car.
Peter Brock relieved the exhausted Chivas. Brock had dramas also with tyres and track debris, he too had to limp to the pits.
After replacing both tyres Brock rejoined the race, eventually finishing the race in second position, a worthy result when almost
half the field failed to finish on what proved to be a testing race.
