A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME…

The 1996 AMP Bathurst 1000 race started on a wet track with the Craig Lowndes/Greg Murphy Holden VR Commodore 2nd on the grid, behind the Ford EF Falcon of Glenn Seton/David Parsons, leading a field of 35 cars.

The terrible weather was to continue all day. But, despite the conditions, off the start Lowndes just edged ahead of Seton at the front, pulling away to the tune of 3.5 seconds
over the balance of the lap. There were dramas and safety cars throughout the course of the day, but Car #1 powered on.

By lap 114 Lowndes was marching along 33 seconds ahead of John Bowe, partnered with Dick Johnson in the Falcon. The hard racing field had made some heroic efforts, but
could not muster the raw speed the HRT Commodore had.

Craig Lowndes and Greg Murphy were simply awesome, leading for 129 of the 161 laps, setting the fastest lap of the race at 2m13.1636s and winning with almost a
20 second lead ahead of the two strong Ford Falcons of Dick Johnson/John Bowe and Tony Longhurst/Steven Ellery.

Both Lowndes and Murphy were younger than any previous victors in the long history of the race.

At the time Craig Lowndes, aged 22 was the youngest driver ever to win…a sign of a great future to come.
