Amongst a strong field of the Wellington 500 the Johnson/Crichton pairing qualified fourth in their Mustang GT. Wet weather and attrition played a large part in the results. While leading late in the race, both the Volvo 240T of Francevic/Lindstrom and the BMW 635 of Longhust/Crowe retired, This allowed the VK Commodore of Brock/Moffat to take the checkered flag, with Johnson/Crichton finished 1 lap behind in second place.
The new tooling that features on the 1986 Mustang GT Wellington 500 are the removal of the side body trim, addition of the passenger side mirror, and rear Momo wheel rims.
